RET, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LEAP (LOCAL TURKISH NGO), APPEALS FOR EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE TO RESPOND TO THE URGENT NEEDS OF EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN SOUTH TURKIYE!


Two massive earthquakes (magnitudes 7.7 and 7.6) struck Southern Türkiye on February 6, 20231. The earthquake intensely affected the surrounding provinces, especially Hatay, Osmaniye, Adıyaman, Gaziantep, Kilis, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Malatya and Adana, where around 12 million people, including about 2 million Syrian refugees, live. The earthquake hit North Syria (Aleppo and Idleb) too.  

Thousands of buildings collapsed, including hospitals. Turkish Interior Minister issued an international assistance call2 and stated that they mobilized the state emergency teams and priority was given to rescue tens of thousands of people under the collapsed buildings in the region. Also, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces3. 

Independent sources report heavy casualties and damage from Gaziantep (close to the earthquake’s epicenter in Kahraman Maras – just 40 km), Sanliurfa, Kilis, and Hatay. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), at least 31,974 people were killed and 195,962 others injured and/or displaced4.  

RET, in partnership with the local NGO LEAP Turkiye, has local teams in the field in Mardin, Kilis, Gaziantep, and Şanlıurfa, assisting the local authorities with urgent needs in coordination with the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
